Clapton was ranked fourth in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." |

Guitar legend Eric Clapton means different things to different generations. If you're of a certain age, you remember The Yardbirds, Cream and Derek and The Dominos, from an era that spawned classics like "Sunshine of your Love" and "Layla." In the '70s, solo Clapton brought the world songs like "Cocaine," "After Midnight" and "Wonderful Tonight."
While Clapton's music has mellowed out in the last two decades with 1991's "Tears in Heaven" and the unplugged version of "Layla" in '92, the British blues-rock phenom has remained one of the most influential guitarists of all time.
Along with Roger Daltrey, former frontman of The Who, Clapton plays the Marcus Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
What version of Clapton will Milwaukee see? Will it be the "adult contemporary" artist that many have scoffed at, or will he delve back into a 50-year career to thrill the audience with a virtual encyclopedia of immortal songs? We're hoping for the latter.
Daltrey, for his part, has released eight solo albums since 1974, and is currently touring in support of his band, Plan B. But his years with The Who are by far his most notable, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame in the first year of eligibility in 1990.
Tickets for the show range from $52.30 to $116.30. All prices include Summerfest admission.
OnMilwaukee.com staff picks for Saturday:
The last time I saw Eric Clapton in concert was the night that Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash leaving Alpine Valley. If I can find a seat on the lawn, I'll go see Slowhand again, with Roger Daltrey opening. -- Drew Olson
If I could go, I'd try to hit Hawthorne Heights (10 p.m., U.S. Cellular) -- Jeff Sherman
See local turntable talent Madhatter and Kid Cut Up at 9 p.m. on the Harley Stage. Their Brewtown cohorts Fresh Cut Collective hits the Cascio Stage at 7:30. -- Bobby Tanzilo
I'd recommend Blue Oyster Cult at the Classic Rock stage at 9:30 p.m., but I'm not sure how many chants of "more cowbell" I could handle before I'd have to leave. -- Andy Tarnoff
